School Counseling Program
at Deer Park Elementary School
The School Counseling Program is a comprehensive one that includes, to name a few, classroom guidance lessons, small group and individual counseling, coordinating the Character Ed. Peer Tutoring and Mediator program.
Topics I discuss with students in classroom guidance lessons range from bullying, teaching our primary students about how to stay
safe in this ever changing and sometimes dangerous world to test taking stategies, goal setting and organizational skills. In addition I offer teachers the option of customizing lessons to the needs of their particular class.
Small group topics are decided by doing a needs assessment with teachers about their particular students. This year we have done a small group with students whose parents are going through divorce or separation. In February we started a "Friendship Group" in which students explore the skills needed to develop and keep friendships, one of the most fundamental needs for students and adults.
Individual sessions are short term in nature and based on the needs that are brought to my attention by students themselves, parents and teachers. If long term therapy is the need I have outside resources that I can refer to parents.
My counseling program is a needs based comprehensive one that changes with the needs of our students which have changed along with our changing world.
